The Munich Regional Court ruled on July 31 that Suno lacked the right to process songs represented by German collecting society GEMA and had infringed copyright by memorizing and reproducing six protected works without a license.[1][2] The works presented in the case included songs associated with “Forever Young,” “Mambo No. 5,” and “Daddy Cool.”[1]

The court ordered Suno to disclose revenue connected to the infringement so damages can be calculated; the amount remains undetermined.[1][2] Suno said it disagreed with the ruling and was evaluating its options, including an appeal.[2]

EU expands AI Office ahead of August 2 rules

[edit]

The European Union added 38 staff to its Brussels AI Office to monitor compliance as the EU AI Act's next phase approached.[3] From August 2, providers must comply with transparency rules that include machine-readable marking of AI-generated content and disclosure duties for certain chatbots and deepfakes.[3]

European Commission officials also said developers should maintain tools for monitoring security risks after OpenAI and Anthropic reported AI-system hacking incidents to the Commission.[4] General-purpose AI providers are required to prepare technical documentation, adopt copyright policies, and publish detailed summaries of training content.[4]

Reddit's DMCA claims against Perplexity and SerpApi proceed

[edit]

On July 31, a Manhattan federal judge rejected most of Perplexity AI's bid to dismiss Reddit's lawsuit alleging violations of U.S. copyright law through the scraping of content from Reddit's platform.[5][6] The ruling allowed Reddit's Digital Millennium Copyright Act anti-circumvention claims against Perplexity and scraping company SerpApi to proceed.[6]

Federal judge denies xAI bid to halt Minnesota nudification ban

[edit]

On July 31, a federal judge denied xAI's request for a temporary restraining order that would have halted enforcement of Minnesota's bipartisan ban on AI tools used to generate fake nude images of real people.[7][8] The ruling left the law scheduled to take effect on August 1 while xAI's constitutional challenge continues.[7][8]

The court said xAI's decision to seek emergency relief nearly three months after the law was signed and only three days before its effective date undermined the company's claim of immediate harm.[8] The Minnesota Attorney General's office said further briefing and a hearing would occur later in August.[7][8]

Delhi High Court protects Yuvraj Singh from AI deepfakes

[edit]

On July 31, Delhi High Court Justice Jyoti Singh granted former Indian cricketer Yuvraj Singh an ex parte ad interim injunction protecting his name, image, voice, likeness, signature, and other personality attributes from unauthorized commercial use, including AI-generated and manipulated content.[9][10]

The court directed Meta Platforms to remove identified URLs within 36 hours and ordered Amazon Seller Services, Flipkart, and merchant defendants to remove specified infringing listings or URLs.[9][10]
