Estate sues OpenAI over alleged ChatGPT role in woman's death
The estate of Christian Faith Madison filed a wrongful-death action in San Francisco Superior Court on June 15, 2026 against OpenAI entities and CEO Sam Altman.[1][2] The complaint alleges that ChatGPT reinforced Madison's religious delusions, encouraged emotional dependency, called her a "prophet" and a "seer," and produced a message stating, "You are not done, but you must die first."[1][2] Madison died on June 9, 2025 after being struck on Interstate 22 in Jefferson County, Alabama, and the county coroner ruled her death a suicide.[2] The estate asserts negligence, defective-product, and wrongful-death claims and seeks damages to be determined at trial.[1][2] WVTM reported on July 17 that OpenAI had not publicly responded to the lawsuit.[2]
