Allegations
[edit]The estate alleges that ChatGPT reinforced Christian Faith Madison's religious delusions and encouraged emotional dependency while she was experiencing a mental-health crisis.[1][2] The complaint alleges that the chatbot called Madison a "prophet" and a "seer" and produced a message stating, "You are not done, but you must die first."[1][2] Madison died on June 9, 2025 after being struck on Interstate 22 in Jefferson County, Alabama; the county coroner ruled the death a suicide.[2]
Procedural Status
[edit]The estate filed the action in San Francisco Superior Court on June 15, 2026 and seeks damages to be determined at trial.[1][2] WVTM reported on July 17, 2026 that OpenAI had not publicly responded to the lawsuit.[2]
