May 5, 2026 — Apple agreed to pay $250 million to settle a class action lawsuit accusing it of false advertising and unfair competition after the personalized Siri features promoted during the iPhone 16 launch in September 2024 were significantly delayed.

Background

A smarter, Apple Intelligence-powered version of Siri was showcased at WWDC 2024 and heavily promoted in advertising when the iPhone 16 launched in September 2024. After Apple delayed the Siri Apple Intelligence features in March 2025, the company pulled its ads, but they had been running for several months by that point.

The lawsuit, filed in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of California, alleged Apple violated consumer protection laws by misleading consumers about the actual capabilities of Apple Intelligence, causing them to purchase devices with features that did not exist or were materially misrepresented.[1]

Settlement Terms

Apple was not found guilty of any wrongdoing. The company stated it settled the lawsuit to minimize legal fees and focus on products and services, noting it has introduced dozens of Apple Intelligence features since 2024 including Visual Intelligence, Live Translation, Writing Tools, Genmoji, and Clean Up.[2]

The settlement provides per-device payments of $25 for each eligible device, which could increase up to $95 per device if claim volume is low. Eligible devices include iPhone 16, iPhone 16e, iPhone 16 Plus, iPhone 16 Pro, iPhone 16 Pro Max, iPhone 15 Pro, and iPhone 15 Pro Max models purchased between June 10, 2024, and March 29, 2025.[2]

Significance

The $250 million settlement is one of the largest AI-related consumer protection settlements to date, highlighting the growing legal risks for technology companies that overpromise AI capabilities in marketing materials. The case joins a growing body of litigation addressing the gap between promised and delivered AI features.
